In the responses to Don Williams articles on Charismatic Worship I saw a desire to clear up some confusion caused by its nature. Charismatic worship is worship that is "directed to the Father, through the Son, in the Spirit." (pg. 145) I think the part we don't get is the "in the spirit" aspect of this structure. I asked this question in my last blog and it has come up again: what is the Spirit's job in our worship? Harold Best makes a good attempt at describing it: ""Christ in you, the hope of glory" made powerfully real by the Spirit, and being filled with the Spirit in order that the finished work of Christ will drive us to the ends of the earth with Good News."(pg. 158) Joe Horness also makes an attempt at describing the activity of the Holy Spirit in a worship service as being an internal moving. Sally Morgenthaler points out that "Charismatic-Pentecostal worship forms are the least understood yet most practiced of all worship expressions world wide." This is the danger of Charismatic worship. Most people have no idea what the job of the Holy Spirit is in worship and because of this he is either de-emphasized out of fear or over emphasized because of a lack of understanding. We have lost the balance of Trinitarian worship.
