Our Priestly Duties

As I was reading, I was struck once again by God’s view of worship and its correlation to redemptive history in general. In the preface to the Bay Psalm Book, John Cotton draws us to look at a certain inter-testamental connections: between the Levites and the Priests of the Old Testament (1 Chron. 25:9, Num. 3:45) and the Church becoming “a Kingdom and priests” (Rev 1:6, 5:8-12) and firstfruits (Revelation 14:4). We also see a contrast of the people of God singing the Song of Moses with Moses (Exodus 15) with those in Heaven singing once again the Song of Moses with the Song of the Lamb(Rev 7:9-10).
I am over and over again awestruck with how God seems to come full circle in His plan of redemption, a plan that stretches over the entirety of history (seeing that we serve the God who is the Lord of history). To me, these connections between the past, the present, and the future all point to one thing: God deserves our worship, and He will always receive our worship. That means that when we worship God (in this case through our singing) we are not only joining with those of the past who have praised our Faithful Lord, but we are also preparing ourselves to one day sing in a glorified state with everyone Christ has redeemed! What a wonderful picture of how great our God truly is!
