“The core problem with the charismatic movement… was its emphasis on victory rather than the dereliction of the Cross, on sanctification rather than on redemption, on victorious living rather than on [“justified and sinful at the same time”]. The charismatic movement blew it because it wanted to pole-vault over Calvary on the way to Pentecost.” (p. 154)
This was a common criticism of charismatic worship (as Sally also noted). This seems to get to the root of the problem: misplaced emphasis in theology. If the Spirit wants to glorify Christ, why should we glorify the Spirit? Do we focus on too much on the blessings of being in Christ and not enough on how we came to be in Christ? How does this appear “practically” in our sermons and our choice of songs?
