In the source readings of today I loved the two aspects presented by Myles Coverdale and Isaac Watts. In reading Covrdale I was struck with the beauty of his passion. He desired that we give thanks and worship God as he deserved. He wrote, “
It greueth me whan I consydre the unthankfulnesse of men, notwithstondynge the great abundaunt mercyand kyndnesse of almighty God, which so plenteously is heaped upon us on euery syde.” (pg 100) It is evident that he had a beautiful passion in seeing God worshiped. Similarly Isaac Watts also had a passion. What struck me of Watts was his passion for beauty. Watts wrote, “
It [the Psalms] the most artful, most devotional and Divine Collection of Poesy; and nothing can be suppos’dmore proper to raise a pious Sould to Heaven than some parts of that Book; never was a piece of Experimental Divinity so nobly written, and so justly reverenced and admired.” (pg. 117)Between Coverdale and Watts I think that there is a good model/goal to be desired by the worshiper, A beautiful passion and a passion for beauty.
