Music: Means or End?
A question has been forming in my mind as I read Horness' article and the responses to it. I am wondering what place the study of music has in worship. It seems that Horness views music as a means to an end, the end being creating an atmosphere where the congregation can experience God. To accomplish this goal he uses whatever works and does not seem to be concerned with the quality or depth of the music used. Best points this out as a fault of contemporary worship: "If there is anything singularly wrong with the contemporary, it is that it has developed no literature or repertoire that goes into the artistic depth of things."(pg.123) Should music be a means or an end in our worship? Should we study music so that it is more of an end in worship than a means? How far can we take that before it becomes an idol?
