“now no protestant doubteth but that all the books of the scripture should by Gods ordinance be extant in the mother tongue of each nation, that they may be understood of all,..”(87) I believe God knew that the Psalms would be translated into different language and when John Cotton said, “if in our English tongue wee are to sing them, then as all our English songs (according to the course of our English poetry) do run in metre, soe ought Davids psalms to be translated into meter, that soe wee may sing the Lords songs, as in our English tongue soe in such verses as are familiar to an English eare which are commonly metricall:” I believe God knew that each different language group would have its own ethnicity, its own music and preferences. God gives us freedom in that the psalms do not contain any prescribed music so that we can put God’s word into music of our culture that will best glorify God. It also has to be “one part of our religious care and faithfull indeavour, to keepe close to the original text.”(88)
